Old Rhinebeck Aerodrome Fly-out

On the morning of October 8th members of the MITFC were rewarded with clear skies and fairly high temperatures to get ready for an exciting visit to Old Rhinebeck Aerodrome. Two teams departed from Hanscom airport, while the third team left from Lawrence Municipal. Our rides for the day were in Cessna 172s, and Beech Sundowner. The IFR flight took us about 1h 20min to Kingston-Ulster airport with spectacular scenery over Massachusetts and New York.

Once all teams landed safe, we were eager to leave for the aviation pioneers airshow. Since we all got a taste of what modern GA flying feels like, we wanted to see how it was a 100 or more years ago! Old Rhinebeck welcomed us with a dozen biplanes from the WWI era, as well as with a few ancient models, called…hmm, flying machines! Yes, they were flying machines! They got those….hmm…propellers!

We got to see biplane aerobatics, old Ford T-models, explosions, a police chase on ground and in the air, a fashion show, industrial size toilette papers, and many airplane actions of course!

Time flew as fast as some of the airplanes did and soon enough, we had to say goodbye to the Wright Brothers to get back to the sky again. Quick refueling, and off we were to home base. With the Moon in front of us, and the sunset behind, we had one of a ride cruising into the night. Many thanks to David for organizing such a memorable fly-out, and thanks to everyone who attended! Happy Landings!

The MIT Flying Club is bringing a fully-functional, completely immersive flight simulator for the F-35 Joint Strike Fighter to the MIT campus on Monday and Tuesday, September 26 and 27 in the Z Center Lobby. Come for refreshments and a chance to try out what Lockheed describes as the “world’s most advanced multi-role fighter”. Attendees will have the opportunity to learn about the technology behind the JSF, talk to representatives from Lockheed Martin, and ride the simulator. Rotations of 5 people/30 minutes will actually get to fly the fighter! A tech team will be on hand to show you how everything works, and then hand over the controls.

Hours are 2-7pm on Monday, and 9-10am and 12-4pm on Tuesday. Refreshments will be provided. Unfortunately due to time restrictions, not everybody will get to ‘fly’- however, we will squeeze in as many people as possible. Admission is first-come, first-served with priority for a limited number of pre-registered students, but we highly encourage walk-ins. The cockpit will be positioned so that everyone can watch each simulation. To give an idea of how many of you to expect (and how much food to order), please tell me when you plan on dropping by and we’ll try to make arrangements to get you in. This sign-up is not a registration form and will not guarantee you a place, but it will help us to maximize the number of people who get to fly.

The schedule:
On Monday, the cockpit will be open from 2-7pm. This day is open only to the MIT community.
On Tuesday, the cockpit will be open from 9-10 AM and 12-4 PM. We will hold a short media program from 11-11:30am. A senior in Course 16 who worked on the F35 cockpit this summer will give a brief presentation. We particularly encourage those interested in careers in aerospace and defense to attend for a great networking opportunity with local officials and Lockheed representatives.

Remember to RSVP! Feel free to contact Jin Stedge: jlstedge@mit.edu with any questions.
